5.0 out of 5 stars Smart, Stylish but Expensive
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 July 2024
Last year I switched my phone back from Samsung to Apple. I previously owned a Galaxy Watch 4 and was interested in buying a Huawei GT 3 Pro but ended up switching before then.
I have always liked the fact that the Galaxy and Huawei watches look like a traditional watch but the Apple Watch looked too rectangular and cheap for my liking, despite being expensive.
I like my smart watches to look like watches so when I found you could get a Series 9 Apple Watch with a Gold Milanese loop I decided it was time (no pun intended!) to give it a go.
Initially it took me some time to set the watch up and pair it and, having a cellular version, it was a bit of a hassle trying to move my eSIM across from my old watch.
Once set up, however, I was really impressed with the screen and the variety of apps, and the hand gestures to scroll through screens is a genuinely useful feature.
I use my watch regularly for tracking my sleep, steps, heart rate, and blood oxygen. It’s comfortable to wear and it does a fairly good job of monitoring my health, even if I did get a bit of a scare once as it said my heart rate was too high (turns out it was due to having dental treatment earlier that day).
I also use my watch for unlocking my car, for following directions discretely without looking like a tourist, and for making and receiving calls. The sound quality is decent and it’s easy to use – I definitely don’t miss my Android Smart Watches as much as I was expecting and have to say the Apple ecosystem is very slick.
Battery life could be better – compared to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, I find myself having to charge it a lot more frequently although it usually lasts a whole day.
When it comes to the screen and the build of the watch, it is very durable and doesn’t scratch nearly as easy as when I used to have a Series 3 watch some time ago.
I have just started exploring some of the iOS18 features – time will tell if this will add anything to the experience but I have found that the battery tends to drain even more quickly so far so it might be best not to update just yet.
Overall, this is a quality watch and probably the best choice for Apple users. It does more than I need it to and I’ve had lots of people commenting on how ‘flashy’ it looks. Having said that, I don’t think it’s worth paying more for the cellular version if you have your phone with you most of the time. I would recommend the stainless steel version over aluminum, however, as it’s very strong and made to last.
If you don’t need the double tap gestures or a brighter screen, and aren’t worried about having one year less of support or the latest features from Apple, then you may be able to pick up the Series 8 for a decent price. But if you want the latest tech and future compatibility and don’t mind paying for quality then this is a slick and solid device that I fully recommend.
